Sweetcorn (in Dutch: Suikermais (lit: sugar corn) is at its best when it’s really fresh. And we’re not exaggerating. As soon as the corn is picked, the sugars start being converted into starches. After a week, all sweetness is gone. That’s why we pick our sweetcorn fresh by hand every day!

Because finding the best cobs takes a lot of practice, corn is one of the products that you’re not allowed to pick yourself. A single cob costs 70 cents.

Three ways to prepare sweetcorn

Boiling (8-10 minutes)

You can have ready-to-eat sweetcorn in the blink of an eye. Just boil it for about 10 minutes, rub some butter on it, sprinkle a bit of salt over it and you’re done. Of course, peel off the leaves first

From the microwave (2-5 minutes)

Break the sharp edge off the cob if they don’t fit in your microwave. Peel off the outer leaves, but leave the inner ones on. It helps it retain heat and makes it easier to handle after you take it out. Account for about 2 to 3 minuten per cob on your microwave’s highest setting. Let them rest for a minute, peel off the remaining leaves, and do the thing with butter and salt, or whatever spices you prefer.

Grilled (15 minuten)

Sweetcorn is also great on the grill. The sugars caramelize and it gives it a light smokey flavour. Just rub some oil on it, turn occasionally, and they should be ready in about 15 minutes.

You can also wrap them in some aluminium foil, add some garlic butter, and finishing them up that way. That can take 5 minutes longer.

Sweet corn soup

Making a soup out of sweetcorn is also delicious and easy. Check out this recipe – in Dutch – on our website.

You buy it, you break it

Does the cob not fit in your pot or microwave? The easiest way it to break them by hand. They’re really tough, so cutting them with a knife is not recommended.

Storage and freezing

After it’s been picked, sweetcorn starts to lose its sweetness. You can slow this down by storing it in the fridge, but the best way is freezing it. To prevent them from drying out, you can freeze them with the inner leaves, or wrap them in clingfilm.

Will this be your first visit?

On our farm you pick your own fruit and vegetables. That’s not only fun, but also healthy. But picking your own products is maybe harder or a bit more complex than you think. These links (in Dutch) will help you get started and answer some questions you may have.
